Opportunity Information: Apply for EDITIONS 202505
The National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC), part of the National Archives and Records Administration, is offering the FY2026 grant opportunity "Publishing Historical Records in Collaborative Digital Editions" (Opportunity No. EDITIONS 202505). This discretionary humanities grant supports projects that publish online editions of historical records, with an emphasis on collaborative, digitally accessible work that helps the public and researchers engage directly with primary sources.
The program is open to a wide range of historical materials and formats. Eligible content includes traditional paper documents as well as photographs, born-digital records, and analog audio. The goal is to move beyond simply digitizing items by supporting curated, edited online editions that make records discoverable and usable in a sustained way. Topic areas can span major themes and movements in U.S. history, including (but not limited to) the law and the social and political history of legal systems, politics and governance, social reform movements, business and economic history, military history, and the arts. A clear priority in this competition is work that centers the voices and experiences of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color, and projects that better document these histories are especially encouraged within the program's scope.
For FY2026, the main practical limitation is eligibility at the project level rather than the institutional level. Because of funding constraints, the NHPRC is limiting applications to current and previously funded projects under this Collaborative Digital Editions program and to projects previously supported through the Mellon Planning Grants for Collaborative Digital Editions in African American, Asian American, Hispanic American, and Native American History and Ethnic Studies. In other words, brand-new project proposals are not being accepted for FY2026, even if the applying organization would otherwise be eligible.
Eligible applicant organizations include state, county, and city or township governments; public and state-controlled institutions of higher education; private institutions of higher education; federally recognized Native American tribal governments; and nonprofit organizations with IRS 501(c)(3) status (excluding institutions of higher education in that particular nonprofit category). The opportunity is listed under CFDA 89.003. The application deadline is May 7, 2025. Awards have an expected maximum (ceiling) of $125,000, and the agency anticipates making about 21 awards. The opportunity record was created on November 26, 2024.Apply for EDITIONS 202505
